About File Fingerprint
File Fingerprint answers one question about a document, receipt, photograph or record: is this the genuine article, and can you prove when it first existed? You drop a file in, the app reads its fingerprint, and that fingerprint is written to a public ledger where it cannot be quietly edited or deleted. Years later, anyone can check a file against the record and see for themselves.
The fingerprint is a short code derived from the file — never the file itself. Your document stays exactly where it is; what goes on the ledger is the proof that it existed, in that precise form, at that precise moment.
Where it came from
This project grew out of Cold Storage Coins: physical coins and tokens struck in honest weight silver, gold, copper and brass, each one loaded with a private key and sealed under a tamper-evident hologram. The app that shipped alongside them was the digital twin of the asset in your hand — it verified authenticity against a public mint registry, watched a balance across eleven blockchains, sent notifications when something moved, and let you sweep the funds on a device that never let the private key leave it.
Proving a coin's balance turned out to be the same problem as proving a file's history: both need a record that nobody can quietly rewrite. So the machinery moved from coins to documents. Accounts from the earlier project carried over, and every coin and token we ever recorded still checks out exactly as it always did — those fingerprints are permanent.
Who stands behind it
File Fingerprint is part of the honest.money ecosystem — a small family of tools built on the same idea, that records should be open, permanent and verifiable by anyone who cares to look.
